Todays Web Browsers:

So Many Browsers, So Many Choices:
The very first web browser was written by Tim Berners-Lee, while at CERN (a European center for physics research). The first web browser to capture the public's imagination was Mosaic, which was written by Marc Andreessen and other undergraduate students at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) in the United States. Most of that group went on to form the core of Netscape Communications Corporation.

The largest single ISP is AOL, with approximately 34 million customers worldwide. They currently run a modified version of MS Internet Explorer. Overall more people, US and worldwide, use the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser than any other. The AOL browser is available only to AOL subscribers. Keep in mind there are still millions of Internet users who use Netscape, Opera and many other variations from browser land.

Microsoft Internet Explorer Ver. 6 SP1: Overall Rating
The most popular web browser in use today. Microsoft "pushed" their version of web access to the forefront very quickly using aggressive marketing strategies.

Minimal learning curve. Extensive options for customizing to individuals needs. Very common target for viruses and trojans. Computer virus protection required. Must keep current with latest patches and critical updates. Excellent support. Free download for IE 6 SP1 from Microsoft.

Netscape Ver. 7: Overall Rating

Opera Ver. 7: Overall Rating
Opera's code has been reworked from the rendering engine on up, resulting in a faster browser packed with features in an exceptionally small download. New features such as the new e-mail and news client, a sleek new interface, improved Hotlist, skinning or drag-and-drop and much more. Opera has browsers for Windows, MAC and Linux OSs.

Minimal learning curve. Extensive options for customizing to individuals needs. Customizable skins. Not a very common target for viruses and trojans. Excellent spam filters in email client. Computer virus protection required. Not frequently updated. Free download trial and extras with purchase. Purchase Opera! This falls under the heading "try it you'll like it!"

Mozilla: Overall Rating
Mozilla was the original code name for the product that came to be known as Netscape Navigator, and later, Netscape Communicator. Later, it came to be the name of Netscape Communications Corporation's dinosaur-like mascot. Now, the name Mozilla is used as the generic term referring to internet client software developed through Netscape's open source project. Netscape Communications Corporation holds trademarks on the names Netscape, Navigator, and Communicator; it has not yet been decided what, if any, restrictions Netscape will place on the use of those names. However, a generic term for browsers is still needed, and "mozilla" may be as good a name as any.

Minimal learning curve. Extensive options for customizing to individuals needs. Customizable skins. Not a very common target for viruses and trojans. Computer virus protection required. Very frequently (almost daily) updated. Smaller download than Netscape 7. Free download for Mozilla.

Mosaic Ver. 3: Overall Rating
Yes, NCSA Mosaic is still around. It was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. NCSA Mosaic software is still owned by and copyrighted to The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois (UI).

Development stopped in 1997. Suitable for Windows 95 and NT. Not a very common target for viruses and trojans. Computer virus protection required. Updates stopped with this version. Small download for Mosaic. Free.

New users enjoy the NeoPlanet Browser's intuitive design, which makes Web browsing, e-mail, and messaging fast, convenient, and fun. Web site compatibility similar to MS IE.

Minimal learning curve. Extensive options for customizing to individuals needs. Customizable skins. Not a very common target for viruses and trojans. Computer virus protection required. Not frequently updated. Very small download, less than 4.0 MB. Free download for NeoPlanet.

WC3's Amaya Ver. 6.4: Overall Rating
